We finished up the new hog house and fencing this week. The fencing was a ton of work but turned out pretty nice. The new hog house is a 20 x 10 ft building for the hogs to shelter in. The new pigs area is just until the pastures green up but will serve as a common area for our pigs.
We would like to thank Tom and Dave for all the help, advice, lending machinery and a hand while building the new hog area. I don't take much help (I can be pretty self reliant and stubborn) but both have helped our farm in a number of ways. We really appreciate it. Thank you to both of you!
We also picked up 7 Red Wattle piglets this morning. 2 gilts for breeding stock, a boar, and 4 barrows(castrated males) that are going to fill orders to meat customers. They are fitting in well with our Berkshires.
Tomorrow I head out to western MN to pick up a registered Berkshire boar, 2 registered Berkshire gilts for breeding stock, and a Magalista/Berkshire cross gilt. The Magalista is a Hungarian pig (my Grandfather would have loved that) that is a hair pig. It will get a heavy coat almost like a sheep's fleece. They are relatively new to the States and are supposed to be the best eating pork around. They are a lard type pig so they have an abundance of marbling make the meat exceptionally tender. They are in great demand from high end restaurants and chefs. Our goal is to cross them into our Berkshires and Red Wattles.
Here are a couple links about Magalistas
